EU Food Safety Authority Issues Opinions on 


Larch Extract (Taxifolin) 


As a New Resource Food


At the request of the European Commission, on February 14th, the EU Food Safety Authority issued an opinion on larch extract (Taxifolin) as a new resource food.

The new resource food evaluated this time is a larch extract rich in taxifolin, intended for non-alcoholic beverages, yoghurt, chocolate candies.       

 It is a water-ethanol extract of larch with a non-fertilizer content of not less than 90%. After evaluation, the EU Food Safety Authority believes that the extract of P. sinensis is fully described, its component data and description will not pose a safety risk, and there is no risk of genotoxicity.

Following a request from the European Commission, the EFSA Panel on Dietetic Products, Nutrition and Allergies (NDA) was asked to carry out the additional assessment for taxifolin-rich extract from Dahurian Larch as a food ingredient in the context of Regulation (EC) No 258/97. The novel food (NF) is a taxifolin-rich water–ethanol extract from the wood of the Dahurian Larch and contains a minimum of 90% taxifolin. The Panel considers that the taxifolin-rich extract is sufficiently characterised and that its compositional data and specifications do not raise safety concerns. The NF is intended to be added to non-alcoholic beverages, to yogurt and to chocolate confectionery.
